about

Tiff’s Joints launches into the ether with its first release in the form of two modern Afro-Brazilian heaters. The A side comes from Sao Paulo’s Oribata, consisting of DJ Tahira and Fernando TRZ. DJ Tahira has been a driving force on the Brazilian music scene for a number of years, his groove-led edits and reworks of various Afro-Brazilian tracks clocking plays from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Francois K, Nightmares on Wax and a host of other international tastemakers. He has spent the past few years researching and immersing himself in traditional Afro-Brazilian music and culture which shines through on “Batuki”, a rolling dancefloor shaker, driven by a sturdy bass line and Tahira’s trademark percussion, peppered with some painfully funky chords. Fernando TRZ is a prolific composer, arranger, producer and keyboard player on the Sao Paulo circuit. Mainly known for his Lavoura and TRZ Trio projects, Fernando has received praise from the likes of Marc De Clive-Lowe and the king of Brazilian keys himself, Eumir Deodato.

The B side is a licensed Tahira edit of Banda De Pifanos De Caruaru’s “Cavalinho Cavalao”. Originally formed in 1924 in Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil, Banda De Pifanos De Caruaru are one of the most important traditional Afro-Brazilian groups of all time. Tahira works the whirling flutes and galloping drums of “Cavalinho Cavalao” into a full on frenzy, bringing the forró classic into the 21st century.
